» Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo Rules - Before the Deal
At the start of every seven card stud hi/lo hand each player needs to put a forced bet into the pot called an ante. All players need to pay the ante before the dealer can deal out any of the cards to players. In seven card stud hi/lo each player is dealt 2 face down cards and a 3rd card dealt face up.
» Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo Rules - After the Deal
- Once the 1st 3 cards have been dealt out to each player there is a betting round. The betting starts with the player that has the highest face up card. The player with the highest up card needs to put in a forced bet of half the full bet or full bet depending upon the strength of your hand. When the forced bet is placed into the pot the action continues around the table clockwise until everyone has gone. Players can call, raise or fold and if there is a raise everyone needs to call or fold to the raise before the next card is dealt.
- When the 1st betting round is complete the dealer deals a 4th card to each player face up. There is a betting round now, which starts with the player that has the highest up card based on the 4th card that was just dealt. Players don't need to put a forced bet into the pot at this point, as they can simply check. Once everyone has had their turn to bet and everyone has checked or called the current bet, the next card can be dealt.
- The dealer can deal out the 5th card face up to each player still in the pot. Players complete another round of betting and then the dealer can deal out the 6th card face up to everyone. There is another betting round and the dealer then deals out the 7card to each player, but this card is dealt face down so noone can see. There is one more betting round at this point in the hand and then at the end of the betting there is a showdown to see who won the hand.
When determining the winner in seven card stud hi/lo you need to look at a few things. First thing you need to see is if anyone qualified for the low hand. To qualify for the hand a player needs to have 5 cards from Ace - 8 without any pairs, so the lowest hand in 7 card stud hi/lo is A-2-3-4-5. If a player/s qualifies the low hand the player with the lowest hand will win half of the pot for the lowest hand. The player with the highest hand in 7 card stud hi/lo will win the other half of the pot, but if noone qualifies for the low hand then the high hand will win the entire pot.
